    BORAX WOOD PRESERVATIVE

    Technical Information Sheet

Characteristics Borax Wood Preservative is a water-based, red-tinted, virtually neutral, sodium-borate rich wood preservative (German Industrial Norm 68 800-3). Approved by the German Institute of Building Technology (Certificate Z-58.1-1225, with the qualifications P against fungi and Iv against insects).

Ingredients Water, borax salt, shellac red.

Application Preventive wood preservation for constructional timber; it is also suitable for new wood with a moisture content in excess of 20%. DIN 68 800-3 provides that it may be used for timber in danger classes 1 and 2 but not for wood that is in direct contact with human or animal food.

Preliminary treatment The timber must be clean and free of grease. Old coats of paint must be removed completely.

Directions for use Ready to use, the Borax solution can be applied by brush, dipping, pressure-tank or spraying. Spraying is only recommended in stationary facilities.
The amounts prescribed by DIN 68 800-3 are:
    1. Painting, spraying or dipping:
wood thinner than 4 cm, 100 ml per m²
wood thicker than 4 cm, 120 ml per m²
    2. Pressure treatment:
for protection class 1 - 20 kg undiluted preparation per m³ of wood
for protection class 2 - 25 kg undiluted preparation per m³ of wood
Cover or protect with plastic after treatment to prevent washing out by rain.

Drying Dry after 24-48 hours, depending on air moisture.

Coverage In order to achieve the protection of DlN 68 800-3, it is imperative that the above amounts are respected. With averagely absorbent wood one coat of the mixture will do.

    Cleaning of
    implements
    Clean with water.

    Storage

Close containers well and protect against frost. Crystallized salt can be redissolved by heating. When stored in temperatures below 5° C a lot of salt can crystallize, which will be hard to redissolve.

    Safety Precautions
  • Wear protective gear while spraying (especially mouth mask).
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Keep away from fodder, foodstuffs and drink.
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
  • Wood preservatives contain pesticides/fungicides and should only be used in cases where wood protection is necessary or strongly recommended.
  • Even natural wood preservatives should not be flushed away.

  • Disposal Ask for advice on quantities to prevent leftovers. Clean containers and take to a recycling centre. Use up all Borax wood preservative you have mixed.
