When
Casein is used on any surface it has a natural opaque mat chalky finish,
unlike any other commercially produced paint. Casein can also be sealed
with various NBT products as set out below to create 'specia' finishes.
Having followed preparation and application instructions for Casein
Paint as per Technical Information Sheet. The following 'special'
finishes can be achieved.
Sealing Casein
Using Preserving Wax or WBC Wax,
Glaze Medium and Antique Waxes
The sealing of Casein Paint, particularly if it has been used
on a wooden surface or wooden furniture gives a soft velvet sheen that
is smooth, hard wearing, and water resistant when sealed and waxed.
Whether it is used on walls or furniture, Casein Paint gives
superior coverage and finish unlike some conventional paints. Casein
can be sealed with either Preserving Wax, WBC Wax or Glaze
Medium, see Technical Information Sheets. An aged effect can be
achieved by applying NBT Antique Waxes ('Clear', 'White' or
'Walnut') see Technical Information Sheet.
Application
Always apply two thin coats of Casein
Paint and allow each coat to dry for 2 - 6 hours. Apply either the
Preserving Wax, WBC Wax or Glaze Medium as outlined
below-
Using Preserving Wax
Casein Paint can be sealed with
Preserving Wax which intensifies the colour by 50%.
Once the Casein is dry, take a clean lint free cloth or a brush and
apply the preserving wax to your surface and allow it to soak in (Casein
will go transparent temporarily so do not be alarmed, it dries opaque).
Allow to dry 12 hours.
Using a clean, cotton lint free cloth or a white scotch pad buff /polish
for a soft sheen.
Note: To make Preserving Wax water repellent on Casein,
apply Antique Waxes, 'clear', 'white' or 'walnut' and polish/buff
to a high sheen. Application is easier if you use 'clear' Antique
Wax before using 'white' or 'walnut'. Refer to Using Antique Waxes
below.
Preserving Wax, will yellow the Casein Paint slightly
because it contains linseed oil. Always carry out a colour test on white
paper or card first. Preserving Wax is very hard wearing, easy
to apply and greatly enhances the Casein giving an optimum result of
a smooth satin finish.
Using WBC Wax
Casein Paint can be sealed with WBC Wax which will seal
and intensify the colour by 30%.
Once the Casein is dry, apply WBC Wax using a varnishing brush
or cotton lint free cloth and apply undiluted to your surface. The Casein
will go transparent temporarily so do not be alarmed, it will return
to an opaque finish once dry. Allow to dry for 15 - 30 minutes. Take
a white scotch pad and polish /burnish to a high sheen.
WBC Wax can also be coloured using Colour Concentrate
(see Colour Concentrate Technical Sheet and Special Effects Sheet
on Wood Stains.)
Application
Mix 1 part Colour Concentrate, 4 parts WBC Wax, 2 parts
water. Stir well and apply to Casein. Allow to dry and polish/burnish
as above. This transparent wax finish allows the underneath coloured
surface to show through. Always do a colour test first on paper of card.
Note: To make WBC Wax water repellent on Casein, apply
Antique Waxes, 'clear', 'white' or 'walnut' and polish/buff to
a high sheen. (Application is easier if you use 'clear' Antique Wax
before using 'white' or 'walnut'.) See use and application of Antique
Waxes below. WBC Wax is carnauba based and does not yellow.
Using Glaze Medium
Once the Casein is dry, apply Glaze Medium - 1 part Glaze Medium 2 parts
water using a varnishing brush to seal your surface. The Casein will
go transparent temporarily so do not be alarmed. Glaze Medium seals
the surface without intensifying the colour more than approximately
15%. Leave to dry 3 hours. The surface can be waxed to create an 'aged'/
'distressed' finish as set out below.
Using Antique Waxes
Do not use Antique Waxes if working temperature is below 15 degrees
centigrade. Having applied one of the above sealing products, one can
'age' or 'distress' your surface/furniture using Antique Waxes. The
wax also makes the surface water repellent.
Application
Remove any skin that has formed on the
wax. Take a clean, cotton lint free cloth and apply the wax. Allow to
dry 30/40 minutes and then polish/buff with a white scotch pad. If the
wax is a bit streaky or not rubbed in well enough, one can use 0000
grade wire wool to blend the wax more effectively.
If a more 'distressed' finish is desired use wire wool and rub vigorously
making sure you work in one direction - this will give added texture
to your surface.
