Ecological
Building. Concern
is growing over the environmental impact of many modern products. There is now
an awareness of issues such as tropical deforestation and 'Sick Building Syndrome'.
Concern about indoor pollution and allergies is particularly high. In terms of
energy and toxicity, buildings and construction are amongst the most wasteful
and polluting areas of modern life. This situation can be changed and Natural
Building Products are part of the solution.
Earth
Products. These
are suitable for historic building repairs and for new building applications.
They are extremely low energy materials, from sustainable resources and are entirely
healthy. They are eminently suitable for "breathing" constructions.
Earth products are easy and pleasant to use and are capable of creating a stunning
appearance. They are durable and easily maintained.
Insulation
Products. These
are suitable for all types of buildings, but particularly for breathing constructions
where control of moisture is necessary. For this reason they are indispensable
in the renovation of historic buildings.
Clay
Board
Made of
clay, reed and hessian. It is a practical alternative to plasterboard
or lath and plaster and is compatible with clay or lime plasters. Clay
products help to regulate temperature and moisture and provide acoustic
insulation. Click here for technical sheet.

Claytec
Plasters - General
These are a blend of clay, fine aggregate and plant fibres. They are
supplied as dry powders in bags or as "green" or wet mixes in 1 tonne
or 1.2 tonne bags. They have an indefinite shelf life whilst dry and
are mixed with clean water for use. They harden by drying and, as no
chemical reaction takes place, they remain workable for a lengthy period
and can be reworked by the addition of water. They can be used internally
on masonry, clayboards, lime plasters and plasterboard and offer a practical
alternative to gypsum plasters. The self-coloured plasters provide a
high quality non-dusting surface without the need for further decoration.

LECA
Widely used in
horticulture and with cement for flooring, Light Expanded Clay Aggregate is ideal
mixed with NHL for use with limecrete floors as an insulating sub-base beneath
ground floors or as a light weight aggregate in slabs. It consists of lightweight,
porous, ceramic granules formed by expanding special clays at high temperatures.
In bulk, the coated version of LECA is free-draining and has negative capillary
action, good load-bearing properties and good thermal qualities (k = 0.11 w/mk).

These are suitable for
the repair and rebuilding of earth buildings. We supply two types
- compressed and extruded. The compressed cob blocks more closely
match the original composition of the sub-soil used for cob buildings,
the extruded cob blocks are slightly smaller and a bit cheaper!
Coverage - a cubic metre of wall rebuild will require 80 cob blocks
18" x 9" x 4"
Bedding mortar - a tonne of 4/1 lime mortar will bed around 160
cob blocks.

Riven
and Sawn Lath

Click to view larger image |
We stock over 100,000 feet of lath and battens. Riven/hand split lath is cut with
the grain and is less flexible than sawn lath and offers a coarser surface for
lime plasters to adhere to, making it more suitable for ceiling repairs. The key
to the riven surface is then an additional grip to that formed by squeezing the
lime plaster through the gaps between the laths. Riven Chestnut lath is a little
more flexible than riven oak lath and can therefore be used for following contours
or undulations a little better if needed. Sawn
larch lath is a good quality wood that is the most flexible, particularly useful
for longer lengths that need to follow old walls that have 'charactor'.
