Traditional Materials Supplied

Dear Everyone at Mike Wye's,

Earlier this year we bought some lime mortar from you for our cottage in Cumbria

This is just to say thank you so much for all your patient help and advice over various phone calls. We'd never have done it without the confidence you gave us.

Thought a before and after photo might help other complete amateurs!

Cumbrian cottage renovation

My partner and I went on a lime day training course some time ago, before embarking on restoration of some old farm buildings. It was a real eye opener and we've never looked back. Using lime to repair pointing and to plaster internal walls has virtually eliminated damp inside the buildings. Neighbours in their tarty barn conversions grumble of condensation dripping down internal walls and of rain almost 'peeing' through stonework where cement has been used. Sodden J-cloths adorn window sills and skirting boards. We don't get that.

Your one day course was the start of an adventure - helping us respect the value of traditional buildings and traditional building materials.

Many thanks for the inspiration
Will and Mel Luckhurst

After extensively using lime putty products in the house, [a Grade 11 Listed Building] a damp survey was carried out by a reputable remedial treatments company. A damp meter was applied to the surface of the internal plaster and the chap just could not believe that a traditional solid wall could be so dry without tanking. The use of lime has allowed the walls to breathe and the moisture to evaporate away without resorting to modern materials.

For the last three years we've been renovating a Tudor smoke bay house in Pinner, Middlesex. The frame is complete other than sill plates and has much of the original daub and hair plaster. Unfortunately it went through a make over in the eighties that subjected it to all the classic horrors - hard render, wrong paints etc etc. Luckily the damage wasn't irreversible and we've slowly managed to turn it round and let the house perform properly and breath by removing the modern materials.

Throughout we've used lime putty, lime wash and laths that you supplied. Last month the house won the Harrow architectural trust award against stiff competition. This is given biannually to a property - modern or renovation - in the area that incorporates best skills, materials and workmanship. We also open annually for the London Open House season and this Sunday opened to raise money to help a charitable trust restoring a nearby property. Over a 150 people visited and many commented on how good the plasterwork and render looked.

I really just want to thank you for prompt, kind, helpful and friendly service throughout all this and for providing much of the materials used in the renovation. I'm not sure how often you get feedback, or heard how things had gone, but I thought the least I could do is let you know how well the lime putty and lime wash has worked out - even I as a complete amateur was able to learn how to plaster - and should you ever need a testimonial from someone who has used your products please feel free the include this note from one very very very grateful customer.
Many thanks
Geoff Atkinson Pinner, Middlesex

Training Courses

Can I, on behalf of Claire and myself, thank you and your cheerful team for a really excellent day last Friday. Even having seen the DVD I would not have believed that so much could be covered so successfully in a single day. Please thank all concerned for us. We will recommend it to our friends and use the contact to continue buying materials from you.
Philip Collings, Devon

Just a brief and belated thank you for all the energy and expertise you put into last week's course, which I found entertaining, informative and motivating.
Paul Masters, Brittany

A big thank you to Mike & his team for the course on Friday. It was informative, humorous, interesting & most useful.
Steve Barker, Eire

Dear Mike,
Thank you so much for a fantastic course on Friday. Dad, Ben and myself thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and came home with lots of ideas about how to go about things.
Many thanks

Just a quick e-mail to thank you, Rick and your staff for the hospitality at the Lime Course that I attended on Friday. It was very educational, but more importantly entertaining. I go on several courses throughout the year and some can be very stuffy and over complicated with too much technical information, but this was nicely balanced for us in the business and also the homeowners. As someone who recommends the use of Lime mortars etc. on a day to day basis I will now be adding your name to my list of suppliers for lime products etc., which I trust is acceptable to you. Thanks again for an excellent day and the superb lunch, it was well worth waiting for!.
Kind regards
Paul Carter, Premier Heritage, Independent Building Preservation & Damp Surveyor, Sherborne, DORSET

Dear Mike,
I just want to say how excellent I thought the 'Practical Lime Course' was yesterday. I only booked the day before without really having thought through what I was expecting! I just felt it was about time I understood more about this subject, it having been a topic of discussion with friends over the past 7 years.

Many thanks to you and Rick for a very cleverly planned day ensuring maximum understanding and hands on experience in such a short space of time.

Best regards,
Jeremy Drakeford, North Devon

Mike
Just wanted to say many thanks for the course today....! Found it fantastically inspirational.

Best Wishes
Annie

Our Specialist Building Team

I am thrilled with the finished scheme. I am impressed at the quality of the workmanship and the professional manner in which you and your colleagues have undertaken, what has been an awkward and disjointed project.
David Cox, Maintenance Team Leader, Devon Property

Thank you so much for making such a splendid job of the pointing and re-rendering of the Tower House and for finishing within the time frame.
I particularly appreciated the men returning on Saturday morning to clear up. All the people who worked on the Tower were friendly and efficient.

Jill Drury, Devon

Could you please pass on my thanks to Rick and the boys for an excellent job. They not only carried out the work in a very professional manner but were also a pleasure to have around.
We are still intending to come to one of your courses, dates and work commitments permitting. And at some stage we will be in touch when it is time to complete the back elevation of the house.
Once again, many thanks from two very satisfied customers.

Mr. Chapman, Devon

Delighted with the work Mike. You've got a great team, please pass this on to them.
I would be pleased to have our names added on to your list of satisfied customers.
